So NewsLives doesn't watch for a broadcast starting. It watches the audience. Every channel is measured against its own running baseline, never against another channel's. Al Jazeera idles above what a regional station peaks at, and comparing the two would be meaningless.
A stream retitled to “Breaking”, “Special report” or “Urgent” is the clearest signal there is, on the occasions they bother to retitle it.
Viewers past 2.5× the channel's own moving average, and past an absolute floor. The floor matters: forty viewers becoming a hundred and twenty is three people telling their friends, not a news event.
The flag clears after three consecutive quiet checks, or ninety minutes, whichever comes first. A permanent alert is the same as no alert.
It's a measurement, not an opinion. NewsLives has no view on whether a story matters, only on whether a newsroom's audience thinks it does.
Every channel is the broadcaster's own official stream, played through their own player. NewsLives is the instrument pointed at them.
Not a word of it. NewsLives is a directory and a viewer; each broadcaster is responsible for its own output.
Order is: breaking first, then your own country and language, then live audience. Nothing else goes into it.
No location, no contacts, no advertising identifiers, no third-party ad networks. You can watch without an account at all.
Alerts fire when coverage breaks, not when a channel goes on air. Otherwise they'd fire all day and you'd switch them off.
Because almost everything is, almost always. A list of live news channels shows all 302 rows lit up permanently, which is the same as showing nothing at all.
Even round-the-clock channels drop between feeds or restart a broadcast. It's usually brief, and the app tells you when it was last on air rather than inventing a return time.
Yes. No account is needed to watch. An account exists only to sync your saved channels across devices, and you can delete it from inside the app.
